What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? South Carolina

My girlfriend had cancer when she was 19 (now 21) and her parents insurance paid for treatment. Now her parents want to transfer the bills they've been paying to her. They are using this to trap her in their house so that she can't move out! Is this legal, or will they remain responsible?

You mean, now that she is an adult in every sense of the word, are they obligated by law to continue paying her medical bills?

The age of majority in South Carolina is 18. It was always her debt, it's just that the contract promising to pay for some of it was in here parent's name. Her parents may have signed a guarantee or notice of responsibility for the treatment. Although that may make them liable for the debt too, it would not remove the responsibility from the adult getting treatment.
