Planned parenthood/insurance/privacy lawsIf a dependent (child over 18 in school and under age 21) of a parent, under the parent's insurance plan goes to planned parenthood and the parent receives the paperwork, what can that parent legally find out about that visit, if anything? Is this right? How does this work? Can somebody give me a better understanding of how this works? Does this young person have protection of their medical records (can their parents look into the details?) even though they're under their parent's insurance plan? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

| By "paperwork" I mean a claim form with a dollar amount on it. Sorry for the confusion if any. |

| There are feederal and state limits on what you can get access to. See: http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/tgr/06/1/gr060106.html |

| Thank you so much for the link. Before I read it, does this sound like a common situation? Is there a general name or category for this kind of situation that would help me search for answers in the future? |

| Okay so let me whittle down the situation a little more. Can a parent who is paying for the over 18 year old kid's health insurance (while they're in school) review their kid's medical record? Do they have the right to access their kid's history with planned parenthood? I just read that article and it's not really resonating with me.... I appreciate the link though! |

Not without their specific written permission. Since you got the bill, have you thought of asking your child about it?

| No, you do NOT have the right to see your adult child's medical record without her permission. If she feels the need to go to planned parenthood without talking to you about it, that could indicate something about your relationship that needs fixing - and violating her privacy (and the law) isn't gonna fix it! |

| Now, see, I figured OP is the kid and wants to figure out before she goes to Planned Parenthood whether her parent can get her medical records if she goes. OP, whether you are the kid or the parent, please do not let anything interfere with the young person in question here receiving medical advice, counseling, treatment, and contraception from a medical provider. Going to PP is a responsible, smart thing to do. |

| Unless you are on the 'authorized' list to receive the information, the doctor's of an adult patient may NOT release this information. I guess I'm lucky in regards to the fact that I have a child who will let me know that I will be receiving a statement. I don't pry, but she always tells me. I am NON-judgmental, so that I am available to listen when she wants to talk. If you are the parent, tell the child that they can talk to you and you'll listen without judgment. If you are the child, just tell your parents that they'll be receiving a statement.
