Yes, an explanation of what benefits WERE paid and what out of pocket expenses you STILL owe.

NOT to tell you in advance what the insurance policy will cover.

To the person that asked about dispensing the funds from my HSA, those funds are my personal money to be used for what I choose. These are funds that come out of my paycheck, they are not just magical funds that show up. I can either choose to use the funds or I can keep them to to use on other services of my choice. To me that is the point of an HSA, that is to be able to make better choices about the medical services we recieve and not just think that big brother will be the provider for all.
Regardless of what other services you save the HSA $$ for, you will still have a deductible that needs to be paid BEFORE your policy starts paying the claims. It's still YOUR responsibility.

Regarding your other statements about home improvement or car repair contracts ( and I absolutely h-a-t-e when people compare their car, appliance, back yard shed, etc. to their physical health and well-being), I would assume YOU would thoroughly read through any such contract before permitting work to begin. Would you delegate that decision to some one you don't know? Why, then, would you not do the same for a health insurance policy or HSA and ASK QUESTIONS or double check with the HR people or insurance representatives BEFORE the procedure. The patient coordinator can only go by the information given to him/her when they call your insurance company.

Deciding not to have a medically necessary procedure because you want to choose to use your HSA for something else could be penny-wise and pound foolish. You'd be responsible for the same deductible amount when admitted to the hospital in cardiac arrest because you stopped breathing in your sleep.

So you're saying that if you'd known you'd have to pay for the service, you would have continued having sleep apnea until your heart exploded? You don't need money if you're dead.

It is the PATIENT'S responsibility to know and understand how their insurance works. This is the most basic of concepts when it comes to insurance! Plans pay X percentage after Y deductible is met. If you didn't know that your plan had a deductible, you must have not even GLANCED at your benefit summary. And you have no one to blame for that but yourself. You can't be angry at someone else because you didn't take care of YOUR responsibility.
