I hope you get approved for the cheaper plan you are applying for.

My mistake. This actually started with me simply trying to find out what we would actually face if we joined the ranks of the uninsured. We are considering it.

Well, when you ask an unanswerable question, don't be surprised when you don't get an answer! We may be smart and knowledgeable, but none of us can predict the future. You were told what COULD happen. It is fairly unlikely that large medical bills would be written off as indigent care when you are not actually indigent. Uninsured but with assets (home, business, income) is not indigent and the medical providers would almost certainly go after your assets. You're not disabled or retired living on social security, and if you can't pay now, chances are when the economy improves, you'll be able to pay at some point in the future. Do try to keep in mind that you are not homeless and you don't have zero income and really, as tight as your money seems, compared to a lot of people, you are living pretty comfortably. Whether you want to take the risk of going without insurance is up to you, maybe you'll be ok and you'll win the bet. But if I were you, I'd want to look at the WORST case scenario and base my decision on that.

Personally, I do agree with you. Dh sees it differently, though, likes to think eveything will come up roses no matter what.

I'm still working on the application. This is by far the worst one yet! They are making me jump through hoops and swallow fire. And then they may end up declining us anyway. All I can do is try.
