I have 3 questions here.

THE INTERVIEW-September 6th, 2005

I work retail as an intimates specialist at a department store. When I was hired the interview went like this:

Q: Tell me what previous experience you have.
A: I have worked retail parttime for 3 the past years while attending college.

Q: Do you have any leadership skills?
A: As a matter of fact, I do. I have been president of the Red Cross Club at my University for the past two years. Last year, I organized a city wide fund raiser for victims of the tsunami....blah blah blah....

Q: It says here you want sundays off. What church do you attend?
A: I uh...um....uh. None. Um...er...huh?
Q: Do you attend church on Sundays?
A: Um...no?
Q: Then you will work at least one Sunday each month. When can you start?

I am almost certain it is illegal for her to ask me this. Even though I got the job, it still bothers me that she asked me this. Is there any thing I can do about it.

NOSEY BOSS

If I am ill, my boss asks me what I have, if I have been to the doctor, and what medications and what doses I am on. This bugs the crap out of me. If I say "I dont know", she comes back with "you can let me know tomarrow". She irritates me to no end with this. No matter what I tell her I am on, she is certain I ought to be on something else. Is there any way I can tell her nicely to bug off. As my manager, does she have a right to know. Does she have a right to discuss it with other coworkers?

DOCTORS NOTE

My latest greivience with this job involves a docotrs note. They say that if I call in sick for 3 or more days then I cannot come back to work until I provide them with a doctors note saying that I am sick. Can they do that? It jsut seems wierd that I need a doctor to tell them Im was sick mon, tues, and wed, even when I cannot get an appointment until saturday morning. It makes even less sense that although they act very put off by the fact I wont be working a 4 hour shift on wednesday, that they wont allow me to work for them again until I get the doctors note. It seems quite inefficient to me.

I certainly feel better now. If nothing else, Ive gotten everything off my mind. Thanks in advance for any replies or help with this.

You opened the door by asking for Sundays off and the employer assumed you were requesting Sundays off for religous reasons. There is nothing illegal about that, sounds more like the employer would have accomodated your request if it was for church.

Nothing illegal about her knowing, what if the medication you are on prevents you from performing the essential functions of the job or you pass out because of it?

Your co-workers or hers? big difference if it is other supervisors or managers.

I just think there could be a better way of her asking. I am a very private person and it made me feel uncomfortable discussion religion at a job interview. Perhaps asking if there is a reason I wanted sundays off, or asking what I do on sundays that prevents me from comming to work. I just felt very uncomfortable with it.

Ive only been on anibiotics since I have worked there. If I dont know the doses of my antibiotics on a particular day, I am bothered by her until I do know. Even if my medication were to make me drowsy, I doubt I would be unable to measure a womens breasts. I am an engineering student, and I have full confidence in my abilities to operate a tape measure. I like my privacy, and she makes me feel very uncomfortable.

She discusses it with both my coworkers and hers. She is quite the busy body, and I dont like everyone knowing everything. Like I said, I like to keep my personal things personal.

Thanks for the reply, Mlane58.
