Viriginia is my state.
I was given a choice (without previous warnings) that I was to be fired or sign a pre-made 'letter of resignation". I chose the letter of resignation as to not tarnish my employment record, however - because I received no previous warnings and because I was given a mere choice of resignation or being fired - can I still qualify for unemployment benfits?

It's possible. Generally "resign or be fired" is the same as firing with regards to unemployment. However, it will depend upon whatever it was that caused them to make the decision to present you with that decision.
