Can my work call my school?

What is the name of your state? Colorado

I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any laws that prohibit my work from calling my school to find out when I am in school? My boyfriend works for a small company and they scheduled him during the day this week because they called his school and found out that he didn't have classes this week (didn't bother to ask him). Because he has another job he is unable to work this extended availablity and they put him on "suspension". Is this legal? Could my work do this to me? Thank you!
