i'm a cashier. am i liable to pay back a $9.00 shortage when i was not and am never present when they count the drawer? i've been a cashier and have been working in retail for well over 20 years and have never been in this situation before. i have not been fired or anything like that but was told that i need to pay the shortage.i live in the state of virginia.

Whether this can be deducted from your pay or you can be "required" to pay it out of pocket is state specific. You didn't provide your state as requested, so I cannot address your issue.
