what to do

I lived in NJ a few years ago. When younger, I had a similiar problem. I wrote to the dept of labor in NJ and got paper work to fill out. I wrote in detail whatever they were asking me. I received a check in about 2 weeks. I suppose they contact the employer and give them grief. IF you were legit, ie on the books and all, you should receive your pay.

I practice in St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida.

Generally, the law in Florida is that an employer has to pay all wages earned. If you are forced to file a lawsuit, and if you win, the employer would be responsible for your attorney fees. Don't worry about the small amount of wages involved. In cases like this, I normally agree not to pursue my fee unless the employer is ordered to pay it. The only exception is when the client makes misrepresentations.

You should schedule a formal consultation with a lawyer. A good means of obtaining an attorney referral is by contacting your State's bar association or your local county bar association. They probably have a web site and charge a nominal fee for the referral. Most attorneys either provide a free initial consultation, or charge a nominal fee. If you are located within the Greater Tampa/St. Petersburg area, I would be happy to meet with you
