A friend of mine recently left a theater company to take a GM position with an upstart theater company. He left his old job under the assumption he would be taking over theater A. Theater A's opening kept being delayed so management staff was sent to work at theater B in the meantime. Theater C was purchased shortly thereafter and he was told he would be able to manage A or C. Company then went on the hire managers for A and C so he was left with B. B was an experimental theater which catered to the Latin crowd. Business never picked up how they wanted it to and now they are either shutting B down or merging its day to day ops with C. Irregardless they are forcing him to take a demotion and a pay cut 2 months after relocating to work at B. Financially as it stands he is screwed. Can they legally do this?

Yes. He can also start looking for another job.

Seeing that he took a job with an upstart company, versus an established one, there are bound to be difficulties getting started.
