In an unemployment situation, I rather doubt that using one certain word once in a conversation with co-workers is going to be gross misconduct. If this teacher had used this word directly to a student, in any situation, or in a classroom situation, that might have been so judged. But as there is not a pattern established of this teacher making racial slurs or there has been no progressive discipline for this issue, it's probably not going to be disqualifying for unemployment benefits.

Moving on is going to be the only alternative. I agree with poster who said all the superfluous commentary about what a racket the educational system is is drivel.
