In an unemployment situation, I rather doubt that using one certain word once in a conversation with co-workers is going to be gross misconduct. If this teacher had used this word directly to a student, in any situation, or in a classroom situation, that might have been so judged. But as there is not a pattern established of this teacher making racial slurs or there has been no progressive discipline for this issue, it's probably not going to be disqualifying for unemployment benefits.
