What is the name of your state? Minnesota

Hello,
I was fired for reporting that my boss, a GM of an 80 room hotel, took home a guests laptop that was in the lost and found after only two weeks.
I found this laptop in the lobby breakfast area and gave it to the GM, my boss, for safe keeping.
This was on a Monday. Over the course of 5 more days he lied to me about taking this laptop home. I know atleast 2 other people that work with me that saw the laptop on his desk. My boss said that the laptop was in the lost and found which was a lie. He said that he mistakingly took it home instead of his own. The two computers are totally different and the guests was in brand new laptop case. Another lie. While this was going on he refused to talk to the guest and left that up to me. This guest is a Doctor and uses this laptop in his practice. It has sensitive information on it. He was a very kind man and was patient. I made it clear that he would get his laptop back.
By Friday evening, I was at the end of my rope so I called the regional manager to clear this mess up. He was shocked to hear what I told him. I also relayed several other things that he was not aware of. My boss had threatened many of us not to call the RM or be fired. He also hired one of his girlfriends kids to work in maintenance, and I was told by the RM that this was not budgeted. All this time the RM reassured me that things would be taken care of becasue I raised concerns about losing my job. He went to the point of telling me to have a relaxing weekend and that the would make a surprise visit on Monday. He said my job was safe.
On Monday the RM showed up and pretty much all hell broke loose. HE had a long meeting and had me search for a new cord for the laptop. Apparently a small dog or puppy had chewed through the cord. This cord ended up costing $140. Oh and yes, the GM had just bought his girlfriends son a puppy.
Tuesday was pretty normal and the RM told me that the GM was given 2 weeks to fix the problems he had created. All this time I was afraid I would be fired, but the Rm had reassured me that things would be ok on Friday, so I felt like I did the right thing.

I went in on Wednesday and my boss called me into the conference room and fired me. He said that my performance was poor and that someone had complained that I had made racist remarks. At that time he could not give me specifics and within a few minutes I was escorted out the door. I called the RM and told him I had been fired. He said he didn't know and said he would call back. That is the last I heard from the RM.
This angers the hell out of me. I'm not a racist. I don't talk like that. I took care of my guests and did much of the GM's job while he was off doing whatever it was he was doing. I know they can fire for any reason in this state, but can he really slander me like that by accusing me of things that didn't happen. and be a thief as well??? I truly believe that if I hadn;t been the one to answer the call and it had been him, he would have lied and said he hadn't seen the laptop. The guest called me back and told me I did the right thing and gave me several nice comments as he was driving to pickup his computer.

Oh, and not long after the head housekeeper stood up for me to this weasel she was fired as well.

Thanks for letting me post this...

Minnesota's Whistleblower Act of 1987

I'm not sure if you can use this, but it might help. I found it at www.mnchamber.com/priorities/whistleblower_bkgd.pdf

It states in part: “An employer shall not discharge, discipline, threaten, otherwise discriminate against, or penalize an employee regarding the employee's compensation, terms, conditions, location, or privileges of employment because: (a) the employee, or a person acting on behalf of an employee, in good faith, reports a violation or suspected violation of any federal or state law or rule adopted pursuant to law to an employer or to any governmental body or law enforcement official;” (Minnesota Statutes § 181.932, subdivision 1)

So what law did the OP's boss break? Nothing the OP posted has been illegal on the employer's part.

Maybe I'm completely ignorant, but isn't taking the guest's laptop without authorization a crime (theft by unlawful taking, or something like that)?

I agree. It seems OP did the right thing in reporting the theft & was wrongfully terminated.
