i left my employer anticipating on a new job elsewhere. however, i was later turned down after behing told i was going to get hired...after i resigned from my job. if my old employer doesn't take me back, would this make me eligible for unemployment benefits?

That'll be up to your state UI board. However, you should by all means apply. The worst that can happen is that you're turned down - there is no penalty for applying when you're not eligible.
