An employee in the State of Washington was terminated mid-month and was told by HR that her medical insurance coverage extended to the end of the month. She was currently under care for an urgent medical condition, so continued the treatment process through the end of that month. Much later, as the bills started piling up, she discovered that her insurance had been terminated by the employer at the beginning of her termination month and that the premium was not paid. She is now facing unpaid bills that reach way beyond her means to pay. At her request, the employer sent a hand written note to the insurance company stating that the employee should have been covered through the end of that month, however it was by then too late for the insurance company to extend her coverage. Is the employer liable for those bills? Can she seek reimbursement for those unpaid bills that would have been paid had her employer not terminated her coverage before she herself was terminated? Please help if you can!
