My wife's employer has asked her to sign a contract stating that she must provide a doctor's note for one (1) day of absence due to sickness or it is considered an unexcused absence and can be reason for dismissal. Is this legal? Can he actually ask employee's to sign such a contract?

Most people are employees at will and have no employment contracts or union contracts that protect them. That means that a boss can fire them at will for any legal reason other than discrimination on the basis of such things such as race, color, creed, etc. or no reason at all. Because of this, the employer has a right to set any terms the employer wants as long as it is not against public policy. Therefore, the employer can require such a contract. In fact, the employer doesn't even need such a contract. The employer could post the condition as a rule.
