if an employee resigns without any notice using the employment at will doctrine, is there anything an employer can do to make an employee continue service?

case in point. employer has employee sign an employment agreement that has two conflicting sections. one section states, "employee's employment shall always be 'at will'... nothing contained in this agreement is intended to conflict with or modify the at will nature of the employee's employment." another section of the agreement states, "the employee agrees if he/she resigns or is terminated... the company shall have the right, in tis sole and exclusive exercise of its discretion, to continue his/her employment of any work assignments during the period of 4 months."

the company is based out of the UK and this language is similar to some other employment agreements i have seen on the web for companies in australia and new zealand. i believe the language is from a standard agreement they use, but may not be applicable in the states since it seems to clearly strike out the employee's will.

anyone with any insight into this, please respond as soon as possible! thanks!!!!
