I stopped working for a small electrical contractor last week on somewhat friendly terms, and we made an agreement for me to come pick up my tools 5 days ago. He did not show, and since then he's been avoiding me, dodging my calls, and playing games, while in the meantime my tools (about $2000 worth) are being carted around in one of his company vans by other employees. I have plenty of work lined up for me but have not been able to do it without my tools. Meanwhile, I can't pay my rent and have overdue bills and a family to support as well (which I could've caught up on by now had I been able to work.) Today I saw the company van in my neighborhood and called my ex-boss to ask if I could approach the driver (my former co-worker) and just retrieve my tool belt so I could at least get in a day's work tomorrow. I left a message stating the same on his voicemail and never approached the driver. I got a threatening phone call back from my ex-boss saying I was stalking his employees and he called the police. (I was not stalking; it was by mere chance and I never so much as spoke to the driver.)

What is my recourse?
