I live in southeastern oklahoma. Two weeks after I got a new job as a habilitation traing specialist (teaching adults with developmental disabilities basic living skills) I found out I was 3-4 weeks pregnant. I told my new employer imediately and worked for the next 3 weeks without incident then I was told that I had to have a release from my doctor before I could continue working. I got the release, the exact wording was Ms. ..... can continue working, her only restriction is that she is not to lift more than 30 pounds. My employer responded by telling me that state law required that I be able to lift 50 pounds. I asked my doctor if he could change the restriction and he agreed to, when I informed my employer about this I was informed that no I needed to be able to lift 150 pounds now. The most frustrating part of this is that at no time in my work day do i lift anything heavier than a laundry basket. Does anybody out there know do I have legal recourse? Are they allowed to fire me for being pregnant?

fired for pregnancy

absoulutly not, they cannot fire you because you have become pregnant.they are required under federal laws not to discriminate on the grounds of sex, age, religion, national origin,or as in this case, under the federal law of the disabilities act.under that act an employer may not fire you because of a permanant,or temporary disability.and they must provide reasonable access, and accomadations to such persons.they can however if they feel by the advice of your doctor, that they do not have any lighter duty jobs for you,may put you on a leave of abstance.and morally they should provide some type of assistance for you in regards to your financial stabilities.i am not an attorney, please seek the advice, from one in your area.good-luck,friends.
