Myself and few other long term employees were recently "terminated with cause" from a large financial services company with no severance or separation benefits. Normally company offers 3 weeks severance for every year of service, if you are in good standing. We were being investigated for downloading music, movies etc, from both adult and non-adult websites. We all cooperated in the investigation and admitted to guilt. We were also aware of the company policy prohibiting visiting adult web sites. In retrospect it seems as if the penalty was severe, especially in light of the fact that other current employees who visited some of the same websites may not have received any disciplinary actions. Is this a case where an attorney could attempt to recover full or partial severance?

The employer is not required to give you any warnings. You stated you knew what the policy was and that you knew what you were doing was in violation of the policy and you were fired. Duh  an 18-year employee should have known better.

Severance is not required by law. What makes you think you are entitled to severance when you knowingly violated a company policy? How others were treated is 99% irrelevant. I'd be terribly surprised if you could even find an attorney to take this case, except for it's nuisance value.

This is what happens when you vist porn or other non work related sites on company time and download content. Adult sites are notorious for being full of spyware/ viruses that can cause major damge. I can't believe that you visited these sites knowing that it was agaist company policy and now you expect a severance package because you violated company policy and it cost you your job.

One word of advice don't do it on company time. If you want to view porn or other sites do it at home. I had a coworker who almost lost their 10 year job because they kept going onto Ebay to check the status of their auction.

**A: you deserved to be fired and have no case.
