Minnesota is the state I live in. A big corporate firm has done this to several people - they call you in the office - fire you by saying that your job has been phased out - then you go home. BUT you have to return the next day for 2 weeks to get caught up on your work, answer questions re: projects, etc.

Not only is this embarassing and demoralizing - the people who still have jobs feel uncomfortable and its a very tense situation for all.

If you do not work the 2 wks. they will not give you the severance package.

Is this legal? Surely the fired person must have some rights.

You have the right to work and receive the package, or you can leave that day with nothing.

It sure as heck isn't the way I'd handle things, but there is nothing illegal about it.
