an employee in california alters one digit of his social security# in order to avoid being tracked by child support authorities. his salary is 40,000 a year and he owes 15000 back support. Is this a crime? And if so how serious? If the employer knows of this fraud can he also be found guilty of violating certain social security and/or tax codes? the fraudulant ss# apparentley does not belong to any other american?

What are the ramifications for the employer if a fellow employee reports this fraud to authorities? thank you:

This attempt to evade child support is illegal, and may well be a criminal act and if the boss knows, he too may be guilty of conspiracy. BUT the stakes are not that high and the child support agencies overwhelmed and no one is likely to prosecute. The guy is also going to screw himself on future Social Security benefits, and is screwing his kids. Not a nice person.
