Gave 2 week notice then in second week was fired? Explain

I gave my notice at work for 9/1. On 8/31 I sent a letter to the CFO that said I understood there was a major lay off in the plant and I can't understand why someone in order entry did not get laid off when there was no orders? There is a lot of talking back in that dept and the people that complained about us are now the ones doing the same thing.
I'm also very upset that you put pressure on Tammy to take a layoff when she was doing work in two dept and no orders in order entry. I just thought you should know.

I was taken into the showroom with my boss and the HR Mgr and was told -by my boss that the CFO said I was terminated immediately. I said I didn't even want to come in this morning, he goes to you have anything to say I said I have nothing to say to you but I need to speak to HR. He left I asked HR if that was going to be bad in the future if I needed a reference and she said no that my termination date would be 8/31 instead of 9/1. I was escorted out to my car by the HR MGR.
Then she said we have to do this so you can't come back and sue/file unemployment and then she caught herself and stopped.

My questions is- Did I get Fired? And how can I get fired if my notice was already turned in. Should I be concerned? Or am I making something out of nothing? What was the HR person mumbling about.
I started my new job on 9/1 and I love it.

No, you were not fired. Your resignation was accepted prior to the last date of your notice. This is perfectly legal, not at all uncommon, and considering your letter to the CFO entirely understandable.

Even if it were a firing, which it was not, you would not qualify for unemployment since you are already at work at a new job. You don't get to collect unemployment while you are working no matter what the circumstances of your previous employment's ending.
