What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CT Can an employer terminate you for opening an inappropriate e-mail in which you did not know the contents?

They can, because no law prevents it. It may be unfair, but it's not illegal. You can file for unemployment. Whether you get it may depend on the exact circumstances of who sent the email and what was in it and how it ended up in your inbox.
