What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?Wa.
If you work in a Dr office and you know the patients that come in to the office you room the patient and access their chart, they realize you have access. My issues is that I was terminated from my job because of what they are calling a HIPAA violation.
I was working with a Dr and a friend at the time came in to the office for a appointment, I roomed this patient accessing her chart with her knowledge. About 2-3 weeks have gone by and I found out that this friend and my husband started a relationship.(we had been split up for a few months). After I found this out, I continued to still work for her Dr. I was doing my job when I needed to access her chart for medical reasons at the patients request. I had known about this patient and my husband for about 5 days, during this time I continued to do my job. I had informed my boss about what was going on in my personal live. I was never told to not continue doing my job if it concerned her. I never talked to anyone that was not connected to her and her chart in the Dr's office. I was told that this was a HIPAA violation and lost my job. Is this a violation?

It's not a violation as long as you only accessed her information for legit business reasons. But it's also not illegal for them to fire you for it.
