can a potential employer say that they cannot hire you because of a felony conviction even if the job you're applying for is not related to the crime?

According to my source, an across-the-board policy that a company will never under any circumstances hire anyone for any position whatsoever that has a felony conviction, may (not will) be found to be discriminatory under Federal law since certain races have a statistically higher percentage of convictions and thus such a policy may have an adverse impact.

However, with reference to both Federal and Louisiana law, nothing in the law says that a person with a felony conviction cannot be disqualified from employment with a particular employer because of that conviction, regardless of whether the crime was substantially related to the job or not.
