I am a teacher at a private school in CA.
We were informed by management that we would continue to be employed until further notice by either side.
However, there would not be a written compensation agreement since it is an at will hiring.

Is it legal to hire someone without a written contract/agreement in CA?

What are the implications of such a hiring procedure?

Yes, of course it is. I dare say that most employees in California do not have an employment contract.

What are the implications of such a hiring procedure?
Absent a contract, you are an at-will employee. That is "at will" both ways. You may quit at any time. Your employer may fire you at any time for any reason not prohibited by law.

Is it legal to hire someone without a written contract/agreement in CA? Absolutely. The great majority of employees are employees "at will" and there is no employment contract in place.

What are the implications of such a hiring procedure? Both you and the employer are free to end your relationship at any time.

What protection does the teacher have against being terminated from his position?
Exactly the same as any other at-will employee. You cannot legally be terminated based on a protected characteristic. Beyond that...anything goes.
