What is the name of your state? Michigan

My employer states that she can make me work for 20 hours at a time. I know that at times that I will have to work overtime because in order to leave the job site, I must be relieved by a coworker. My questions are:

Do I have to be given prior notice beforehand of the overtime? (I have heard that I need 24 hours prior)

How long can I be forced to work? (I have heard that 16 hours is the limit in Michigan).

There is no Federal requirement that you receive 24 hours notice of overtime, and there is no Federal statute limiting the number of hours you can be forced to work. I could find nothing in Michigan law regarding either issue, as a general regulation, either. However, it is possible that your specific industry does have a limit on the hours you can be required to work (I will be VERY surprised if there is a law requiring 24 hours notice before you can be asked to work overtime). You will need to check with the state DOL to see if there are any industry-specific regulations.
