This question is from the state of North Carolina:

Is it legal to write-up or punish an employee for leaving to pick up his/her child when schools and daycares have closed due to inclement weather?

While it is not indicative of a family-friendly company, it is not illegal.

It's unlikely an employer would discipline an employee if this was the employee's sole instance of absenteeism. If discipline ensued, odds are that this is just the latest in a series of absences.

Thank You

Thank you for your response. I wish I could say this employee was habitually absent, but she is not. She is always on time and always at work. She has always been considered a "star" employee until this. I believe this manager was trying to prove a point. She wrote up anyone who left to pick up a child.
