Due to the economic slowdown, my employer announced that everyone would be reduced to 32 hour work weeks and that the company would be closed from Christmas Eve to Jan 3. They also said we would not be allowed to use any accrued vacation days to make up the other day per week or any of the days during the shutdown. Can they really tell us we can't use an earned vacation day at the same time as they are telling us we will not be allowed to work? I live in Seattle, Washington.

It is legal for the company to restrict the use of vacation time. In most states you would be able to collect unemployment for the period you are furloughed but not in Washington. The state has a 2 week waiting period before unemployment benefits will be paid. Makes you wonder what they are making you wait for?
