What is the name of your state? TX

Are veteran's (disabled or otherwise) protected from RIFs, Layoffs, etc.?

Only to the extent that you can't be singled out for layoff because of your veteran status. The law requires that veterans be treated no differently than anyone else. It does not provide for special priviledges, other than those laid out in USERRA regarding military leave and reinstatement.

If you have been slated for layoff or termination due to a RIF regardless of your veteran status or disability, that is perfectly legal.

As a disabled Veteran the only thing I can tell you which might be a factor is that before a disabled veteran is laid off the company should look long and hard at the tax advantages it will be losing.

Given two equal employees, the disabled veteran returns at a minimum, a 10% tax advantage to the company. So, although I agree with beth as to the law, the practicality is, it would be stupid to lay off a dav BEFORE an equal non-dav employee.
