What is the name of your state? New Jersey
My friend has been working (temp) as a Customer Service Rep for Cablevision in New Jersey for about 4 months. he just got his application to become a permanent employee. Prior to working there, he was a cab driver in New Jersey. Cablevision is requesting his past W-2 forms in order to verify employment. Can they do that? Can't they verify employment by calling the cab company? Why does he need to provide his W-2?

Yes, they could verify by calling the cab company, but they choose not to and the law does not require that they do it that way. If they want him to confirm by providing his W-2s, they can legally do so.

He doesn't have to provide his W-2s if he doesn't want to. The company doesn't have to hire him if they don't want to, either. It's his choice.
