I work for a major restaurant chain in Minnesota. Often, the management will send I or others home 2 or more hours early against our will because it is slow. Is this OK? An irregular schedule is hard enough to work around, but to be sent home and lose out on wages and tips hurts even more.

Thanks

Though an inconvenience and costly (in lost wages), there is no requirement for an employer to give you a minimum number of hours or to require them to work the scheduled hours.

You might try to see this from the employers view: it is very hard to schedule workers in 'customer driven' workplaces. You can only make assumptions of the numbers of employees and hours then, if it doesn't work as hoped, you may have to eliminate some expenses by asking employees to go 'off clock'. A few less hours when justified is a lot better than getting laid off and having NO job.
