What is the name of your state? Illinois

I recently gave my 2-week notice that I was leaving my employer. Since I was going to a competitor, I was asked to leave immediately. Before I made it home, the company had already called my house twice. I returned the call and was told that I took some files that did not belong to me. I defended myself and got off the phone. A little while later, an attorney called me. I did not take the call.

I have since heard that my boss gathered everyone together after escorting me out and told them that I stole files. This is of course untrue! What is my recourse? Should I pursue it? Will it cost me more than it is worth? How do I deal with the attorney that called?

Unless you can demonstrate that your boss purposefully lied about you or was negligent in what he said AND you suffered damages as a result, then this does not constitute slander.

If that attorney calls again, you need to listen to what he has to say. There is no downside to listening. If he asks you about the files, tell him you did NOT take them. Don't get into an argument with the guy - just tell him you didn't take the files and you don't have the files, wish him a good day and get off the phone.
