I am currently working as a sub-contractor handling sheet metal. I recently gave my employer my resignation and he still owed me one week of pay. I called 1 week after the scheduled pay day and was told that he was "holding" my check for at least 30 days and sending it for legal review.

Since I did the work and should be paid for that work, how can I get my money without hiring a lawyer which I can't afford?

I am not a "low income" person and do not qualify for assistance.

Sue the company in small claims court. Besides your pay you may also collect the cost of collecting it too.
