Suspended from Work because of my past, Unjust?

What is the name of your state? Virginia

I am an ex-felon, I have worked for the same company for 5+ years. The other day I was suspended from my job because I am a falon. My information is being reviewed at my company's home office, on Dec 20 they will decide my fate. I did not lie on my application and I said I was a felon. In my five years with this company I was promoted 2 times and have near perfect attendence. I have always had above average evaluations. My charge was position of child pornography, and untill this year I was not on the public sex ofender reg. Va changed their laws this year and now I am required to register on the public web site with my address and my place of work. I think my job caught wind of this and want to terminate me because of it.

I have no other convictions, I have never been in trouble before or after this conviction. I am a law abiding citizen. I just got married and bought a house. If I lose this job I'll prob lose my house. What Can Be Done.

Can my job fire me after being employed for 5 years.

Thanks

If they decide to fire (terminate) you, yes it is legal. They can fire you for any reason (except race, age, religion, etc.) at any time* - just like you can quit a job at any time for any reason. What is your occupation - does it involve children - even if it doesn't, they can still fire you if they so desire. *(The only exception might be in cases where the employee has a contract to the contrary.)

I understand that VA is an employment at will state. No my job does not directly involve children, I work for a Major retailer. If I am fired would I have a civil case? Damages being my salary?

You would not have a civil case because it is legal for them to fire you for the reasons you provided us.

Application

When yuo applied for this job did you disclose the felony? Most likely not. thsi means you lied on application "anytime" you lie on an application you can be terminated of know of no time limit on this. But even witout that "at will" means yes they can. Honestly most famlies would not want thier children shoping in a store where a pedophile worked! You have no law suit your best bet is to quit before they fire you!

Did you miss this part?
I did not lie on my application and I said I was a felon.

Thanks for the help people.

But is is my understanding from business law classes I had in college, that "at will" implies with in reason, I.e you can fire anyone for anything. but if someone fires you for example you making a face at them you can have a civil case bease it is unreasonable to fire someone just for a facial exprestion.

Anybody can have a civil case. I can sue you for being (fill in the blank). But, that doesn't mean that I will win. Hell, it doesn't even mean that any reasonable attorney will take my case.

I'm afraid you are badly mistaken. Firing someone for an unreasonable or silly reason does not result in civil liability for the employer. If I want to fire someone for wearing green on Tuesday, I can. It would be a stupid thing to do but it's not illegal nor could I be successfully sued.
