terminated due to partner's termination??

My boyfriend and I both worked at a design company.
He walked out of the job, and the next day we where both terminated.
My ex-employer said I was only fired due to conflict of interests.
I know this legally applies to married couples, but we where not married.

Is this legal?

Yes. It doesn't matter whether you're married or not. If your employer believes your relationship with him constitutes a conflict of interest, they are free to terminate you.
