I want to terminate an employee for excessive absenteeism. The employee usually has a doctors excuse--however, I think this doctor will give you an excuse to miss a week of work for a broken fingernail. What should I be aware of/concerned about? We are a small company--5 employees--state of Georgia.

The fact that he has a doctor's note does not automatically excuse him from work. Assuming, of course, that both the company and the employee qualify for FMLA, you need to make sure that he does not have a serious health condition that would qualify him for FMLA leave. As long as he does not, term away.
