Was recently asked to leave my job. among things i took was an address book that i personally purchased, used for my job . in it were phone numbers and contacts that i had developed over 27 years while employed. does the employer have any right to the book?

The book, no. The information contained therein, yes.

Tear out the sheets and give them to your employer.
