I live in New York City and am having trouble with obtaining unemployment benefits. I applied for benefits at the end of July 2001. My former employer sent me a letter in the mail stateing I abandoned my job three days after I sent them a doctors note describing my illness and when I would return to work (in two weeks). I was not covered under the Family Medical Leave Act because there were only three employees. Nevertheless, I did receive three checks then they suddenly stopped. I called Albany (their headquarters) and they told me my benefits were stopped as they were investigating. I have e-mailed,called, snail mailed and faxed over all evidence supporting my claim. Nobody has called or written me to verify my side of the story. My husband was unemployed before and they CALLED him first to verify the information then they stopped his benefits. It has been a month with nothing! Is this normal? Do I have ANY legal recourse? Has anyone had similar problems with unenployment? Thanks all!
