After a recent merger of two laboratories my old boss (who is on "the board" of the new laboratory) made a verbal promise to all employees that nothing would change after the merger. This verbal promise was made with regard to salaries and wages. I am now being told I need to increase my daily hours of work or I will possibly let go. Is a verbal promise the same as a contract or can I be fired soley for not working more hours.

No, it is extremely unlikely that the 'verbal promise' constitutes a contract. Yes, you can be fired for not working more hours.
