What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NJ

Guessing that it means your former employer is contesting your unemployment claim and they are investigating.

OP, you haven’t given any information about what may have led up to the firing. Was there an incident or were you talked to about something? What were you told when you were discharged? As others stated, it means they fired you for what they see as misconduct.

It means the person making the statement isn't sure.

If you'd care to give us some context, we can advise you whether it matters.

Did you file for unemployment, and what was the response? If that was the reply from UI, should should have received a determination with instructions on your appeal rights. Sometimes they will tell you (via phone) what te employer has said happened.
