There making us sign a confidentiality contract stating that we can't work for other companies for a period of 1 year if we decide to quit.

Still legal.

Although, it may or may not be enforceable, depending on the laws in your state regarding noncompetes. Only an attorney in your state versed in contract/employment law would be able to tell you, after reading the agreement in its entirety.
