What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Michigan

OK, my situation is as follows. I am about to graduate from PhD program in mathematics from a top 20 university (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), I do not have any job offers for now (due to economic crysis, not due to bad credentials).

By applying for OPT I will be legal here in USA for 6 more months, but there is a chance that I will not be able to get a job offer during that time either. What is the right thing to do during this time in order to stay in USA permanently?

Will it make sense to apply for EB2 NIW or the chances of having it approved are too low? Also, if I do not have EB2 approved, what negative longterm effects will it have (e.g. I am applying for immigration while on F-1 status which has no immigration intent - so maybe in the longrun i will create problems)?

Or maybe it will make more sense to apply for asylee status (can it be based on economic hardship)?

My home country is economically f#$ked, I will be able to support my family there better by working at gas station for cash here in US , than as university professor back there... Sad but true.

From your post, I'd recommend that you invest a couple hundred dollars in a consultation with a good, specialist immigration attorney. The ideas you mention are not DIY and are not for the average imm. attorney.
Fong & Chun would be a good start.
