My F1 expired on April 25th because I withdrew from my school.
I have a valid B1/B2 visa.
My spouse has a F1 visa which expires on May 12th.
I would really like to stay until June 6th, (personal reasons)
and I would like to do this legally. Which would be the best way?

On May 4th I went to Tijuana for a day trip and tried to come back with my B1/B2.
The Home Security officer at the border said I could not change my visa status
by coming back on the same day, and that I needed to stay for at least 3 weeks.
Then he changed it to 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure he didn't know what the exact time limit was himself.
He also said that if I went to another country (not a border country like Mexico or Canada),
I could come back on the same day with a B1/B2 visa.

And they said my F1 was still valid.. which really doesn't make sense.
I was readmitted to the US with a F1 visa..

What this resulted in was a I-94 allowing me to stay until May 25th.
The home security officer said that I could stay 30 days after expiration of the visa.

(1) So do I really have to stay in Tijuana for 2 weeks?
(2) Or should I fly to Costa Rica or Bahamas for 1~2 days?
(3) Or should I file for F2 status, knowing that this would probably be denied,
to stay in legal status while pending decision?

I plan on coming back on F2 status in August,
(my spouse will have a new F1 from another school)
So I don't want to mess up any possibility of being denied a F2,
or being denied entry.

I would really appreciate any kind of advice.
