    J1 to H1

What is the name of your state? Maryland

I came to US in June 2004 on J1 at UCSD. I have written USMLE steps and now expecting a residency program starting July 2005.
I am trying to find out whats the procedure to get this J1 converted in H1?

First of alll, you need to be sponsored for the H-1B by the employer (hospital/school where you'll be doing the residency). Secondly, you need to determine whether the J-1 you had allows you to change status to H-1B. If there is a 2-year home residency requirement attached to your J-1 , you will not be able to change status to H-1B unless and until you either satisfy that 2-year home residency requirement or obtain a waiver thereof.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or if I may be of further assistance to you in this matter.
    Thanks,
