    residency for naturalization

What is the name of your state? Ohio
Hi, can you tell me what the residency requirements are exactly for naturalization in this cas? mom has had green card since 1991.she is 66yrs old. since getting card she has spent more time out of country than in. usually more than a year at a time. She has used a series of re-entry permits to do this She had an unmarried daughter in lebanon she was looking after.Daughter is now married. Now mom wants citizenship how long does she need to remain/reside in US before applying for naturalization.. She was told only one year of continious residence in the US was required but that doesn't sound right to me. I don't want to delay her but I also don't want to apply and pay fees only to be rejected because she has not been here long enough.

Looking back from the time she would apply for naturalization, she has to have been physically present in the US for at least 1/2 of 5 years.
    Thanks,

thank you for your reply.one more question though/ If I inderstand correctly each time she is out for more than a year she has to start over right? The last time she stayed in Lebanon for 3years and 3 months. She has been here for one year now. I am hearing constantly of the "friends" back home who's "grateful"children managed to pull this off in a year. Mom is very stubborn and not healthy at all. I don't want her to go back at all but she is determined to be naturalized then go to visit daughter again. daughter was on waiting list then aged out and married. I have applied for her family as her sibling but this can take years. mom does not want to leave them behind. I have told her that she must remain here for 2 1/2 years now for naturalization but she assures me that I am wrong because others have done it in one year. She is making me nuts. I am willing to hire a lawyer if there is a chance but I don't see it happining

No, your mother is wrong about only needing to be in the US for one year before becoming eligible for naturalization.

Download print and highlight the Guide to Naturalization from uscis.gov

If she continues to argue, tell her to get her friend on the phone and walk her through what these more grateful, on the ball children did for their mothers.
    Then give her a kiss.

thank you I am trying to be a grateful child here but it's getting harder she mainly wants naturalization because it will move my sister up on the list if mom applies for her instead of me (as I have already done) I feel bad about sisters situation but I can't change laws. Mom is about as stubborn as they come. I really don't believe that she could ever pass a test anyway . She is completely illiterate in english and in arabic and refuses to even try to learn, she says she is too old. i'm really trying to help but i'm getting nowhere and of course it's all my fault, everyone else has wonderful thankful children yada yada yada..... All these other people?? there are so many she can't even name them...it's a common thing in her village everyone has better children than she does.
I'm sorry to vent here i'm just so tired of hearing this crap I could scream it does me no good to print stuff out she can't read and won't believe it anyway. Oh well Thank you all for your help.

Sorry, that wasn't very practical of me to make the assumptions I did.

Mom is probably lucky that she continues to be readmitted to the US--it doesn't sound as if she is even a resident, really.

Maybe it would be good to schedule a meeting with a lawyer (if you can find one she will believe) and have someone more official tell her?

    best luck with that!
