social security, immigration question

What is the name of your state? new york state

i have previousyi used a fake social security number for employment, but am now married legally to an American woman and am elligible for a real social security card. However, the old number is linked to my address and also my name. what are the risks of my illegal behavior and how do i go about remedying them before talking to the SSA?

Have you already submitted the petition for permanent residence on the basis of your marriage to a US citizen? Are you eligible to do so? You are only able to get a social security number if you apply for permanent residence AND if, along with that, you apply for an employment authorization document. Once that happens, simply apply for the social security number with the SSA. Obviously if the one you have been using is fake in that it was never issued to you officially, then there should be no official record of it with the SSA.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or how I can be of further assistance to you in this matter.

Believe it or not, you can get Social Security credit for the account you used illegally. Spend some time at ssa.gov before you go in tomorrow. I don't know what the IRS's postition is on the back taxes, but it's a start.
