Hi, I write for my girlfriend. She will finish a master on May 18, 2005 and plans to start a doctoral degree which should start around August 2005. She is now on F-1 with a visa valid until 2008. Her I-20, however, is valid until 5/18/05.

Is she able to stay in the USA between 5/18/05 and the start of the doctoral program? The student office claims that she can stay as long as she informs them and applies for a new I-20 no later than the end of June. Is this information correct?

What if she temporarily leaves the country between 5/18 and August (say vacation to homeland)? Can she do that and return as F-1? My guess is no if she has no new I-20, but yes if she has it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I have more questions, but will leave it to other posts for now.

Well, thank you for the comment. Though I'd prefer to know other opinions, especially on the second question which was not discussed with the student option.
