What is the name of your state? new york

I came to USA three months ago on j-1 visa, got my social security number and started working with one manhattan firm. I also applied for asylum few days ago.
I'm interested to know the following:
While I'm waiting for my 150 days to expire, after applying for work permit, I got my job legally, so can I continue my work after my j-1 status expires, until I apply for work permit?
And, if that is not the case, can I volonteer that period, because I really don't wont to give up on this job.

Thanks!
